Ushers
The Rector and the Vestry have requested a number of changes in the Ushers’ duties during the worship service that will hopefully create a more welcome environment for guests and visitors to
First, one of the two Ushers will be positioned about half way down the aisle to provide direction and assistance in seating the congregation. This is especially important on Sundays when high attendance is expected and we need to maximize the seating in each pew. The overall intent is to “balance” the seating of the congregation and to fill in the pews toward the front of the Church to permit a minimum amount of disruption during the service when seating late arrivals.
Second, the Rector and the Vestry want the Ushers to insure that the pew doors remain open until a pew is entirely filled. An “open door” sends a positive “welcome message” to visitors/guests and other members that they are “welcomed” in that pew. It is the Ushers’ responsibility to close all pew doors just before the procession begins.
To help the ushers, parishoners are asked to move in toward the windows as others are seated to allow for other persons to feel welcomed in the pew. If one prefers to sit on the aisle, it would be helpful for the person to stand up and step out of the pew when the Usher is trying to seat other persons. It is uncomfortable and embarrassing for individuals to have to “climb over” someone upon entering a pew.
Please contact the church office with any questions or concerns.
